Heavy Rains and Flooding Worsen Across Volta Region of Ghana

Heavy rainfall has triggered widespread flooding across parts of Ghana’s Volta Region, leaving thousands of residents displaced, damaging homes, disrupting transport, and forcing the closure of schools.

Thousands Displaced by Floods

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) reports that the flooding has affected several communities, with thousands of people forced to leave their homes as floodwaters continue to rise.

Ketu South

Ketu South has been among the hardest-hit districts, where severe flooding has displaced more than 4,000 residents. Many homes remain submerged, with families seeking temporary shelter while emergency response teams assess the damage.

Kpetoe

In Kpetoe, heavy rains caused the Tordze River to overflow, submerging the Kpetoe Bridge on the Ho–Denu Highway. The flooding has displaced approximately 500 residents, disrupted transportation, and brought local economic activities to a standstill.

Adutor and Sogakope

Communities in Adutor and Sogakope have also been severely affected. Floodwaters have cut off access to schools and community health centres, making it difficult for residents to access essential services. Community members are calling on authorities to dredge nearby rivers to reduce the risk of future flooding.

Health Services Under Pressure

The flooding has placed additional strain on healthcare services. The Volta Regional Hospital in Ho is experiencing a critical shortage of blood, forcing the postponement of some surgeries. Hospital officials are appealing to the public to donate blood to help save lives and ensure emergency medical services continue without interruption.

Housing Development Plans

Amid the ongoing challenges, the Tema Development Corporation (TDC) has announced plans to construct new housing projects in the Volta Region. The initiative is expected to help address the region’s housing shortage and provide improved accommodation for affected families and future residents.
