Pupils and teachers of Denu Chicago Basic School in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region now have access to a new four-unit modern toilet facility following the completion and handover of the project.
The facility was constructed through a joint intervention by the Ras Muta Foundation and the Denu Nugoryiyi Foundation and was handed over to the school on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
Long-standing sanitation challenge addressed
The school’s Headteacher, Mr Prosper Mensah, said the absence of an appropriate toilet facility had been a major challenge for several years.
According to him, pupils sometimes had to leave the school compound to access toilet facilities elsewhere. This created safety concerns because the school is located along a major road.
He said there had been instances where pupils leaving the school in search of toilet facilities narrowly avoided accidents involving motorcycles and vehicles. Teachers were also affected, as some had to leave the school premises during working hours to use facilities outside the school.
The new facility is therefore expected to improve sanitation while reducing the risks associated with pupils and teachers leaving the school compound.
Foundations support school sanitation
Mr Seth Darlington Nyasorgbor, who led the Ras Muta Foundation, said the intervention was intended to provide a useful facility that would benefit the school and the wider community.
Speaking on behalf of the Ras Muta Foundation and the Nyasorgbor family, Mr N.K.K. Gidiglo said the project was also part of efforts to honour the memory of the late Edem Divine Nyasorgbor, popularly known as Ras Muta.
He said the family considered providing a facility that directly improves the wellbeing of pupils and the community a meaningful way of preserving his legacy.
Denu Nugoryiyi Foundation pledges support
Mr Israel Selikem Bossman, Assembly Member for the Denu Electoral Area and leader of the Denu Nugoryiyi Foundation, expressed appreciation to the Ras Muta Foundation for its contribution to the project.
He also assured the school community of his support towards maintaining the facility.
The school presented citations to the two foundations in recognition of their contribution, while pupils and staff expressed appreciation for the new facility.
A safer environment for pupils
The completion of the toilet block is expected to improve sanitation and provide a safer and more dignified learning environment for pupils and teachers at Denu Chicago Basic School.
School authorities have also assured the project partners that the facility will be properly maintained so that it can serve the school community for years to come.
The development highlights the role of community organisations and foundations in supporting basic infrastructure and improving conditions in schools across the Ketu South Municipality.
