Accra, Ghana β The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), through its Accra Metropolitan Office, has launched a proactive tree-cutting exercise aimed at reducing the risk of disasters caused by weak and hazardous trees ahead of the rainy season.
The initiative, dubbed #CuttingWeek2026, forms part of NADMO’s Disaster Risk Reduction campaign to prevent tree-related accidents during storms and heavy rainfall. The exercise involves the identification and removal of weak-rooted and dangerous trees across the Accra Metropolis to safeguard lives, property, and public infrastructure.
According to NADMO, the operation is intended to minimize the impact of severe weather conditions, which often result in fallen trees blocking roads, damaging buildings, disrupting electricity supply, and causing injuries or fatalities.
In a public notice, the organization urged residents to remain vigilant and report any dangerous or unstable trees in their communities for immediate assessment and removal.
“Before the next storm, we’re acting now. The Disaster Risk Reduction Team is removing weak-rooted trees across the Metropolis to protect lives and property,” the statement read.
The campaign is being carried out with the support of the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Nii Kpakpo Allotey, as part of the city’s broader efforts to improve public safety and disaster preparedness.
Residents can contact the Accra Metro NADMO office using the following emergency numbers:
- 020 982 7807
- 020 982 7425
- Toll-Free Emergency Line: 112
NADMO has encouraged the public to cooperate with field officers and continue reporting potential hazards, emphasizing that disaster prevention is a shared responsibility.
As Ghana continues to experience seasonal rains and strong winds, authorities believe preventive measures such as the ongoing tree-cutting exercise will significantly reduce disaster risks and enhance community resilience.
