Police Seize 88 Unapproved Vehicle Lamps and Horns in Volta Region

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service in the Volta Region has confiscated 88 unapproved vehicle lamps, horns, and a siren during a special road safety operation carried out across major highways in the region.

The exercise, which targeted vehicles fitted with unauthorized lighting and sound devices, was conducted along the Peki–Asikuma road and within the Juapong municipality. According to the police, the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety and enforce compliance with Ghana’s traffic regulations.

During the inspection, officers stopped several commercial and private vehicles as well as motorcycles to examine modifications that could endanger other road users. The operation led to the removal and confiscation of dozens of illegal lighting systems, horns, and a siren that had been installed without approval.

Police officials explained that the use of unauthorized vehicle lamps, especially excessively bright lights and flashing systems, can reduce visibility for other drivers and increase the risk of road accidents, particularly at night.

Instead of making arrests, officers used the opportunity to educate drivers about the importance of complying with road traffic regulations and maintaining approved vehicle standards.

The MTTD emphasized that vehicle owners must avoid making unauthorized modifications that could compromise public safety. Drivers were also encouraged to ensure that all accessories installed on their vehicles meet the standards approved by the appropriate authorities.

Road safety experts have welcomed the exercise, noting that unapproved lighting systems and loud horns have become increasingly common on many roads across the country.

The police have indicated that similar operations will continue throughout the Volta Region as part of broader efforts to reduce road accidents and improve traffic safety.

Residents have been encouraged to cooperate with law enforcement officers and report vehicles using illegal lighting or sound systems.
