Ave-Dakpa, Volta Region – President John Dramani Mahama has expressed confidence that completed sections of the ongoing Ho–Aflao Highway reconstruction project will be commissioned within the next six months, marking a significant milestone in one of the Volta Region’s most important infrastructure projects.
The President made the announcement during the commissioning of the Akatsi North District Police Headquarters at Ave-Dakpa as part of his working tour of the Volta Region.
Speaking at the event, President Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming road infrastructure across the region, describing the road sector as a key beneficiary of the government’s flagship Big Push infrastructure programme.
Reflecting on the 2024 election campaign, the President recalled travelling on the Ho–Aflao Highway and witnessing its poor condition, which inspired his pledge to make the road’s reconstruction a top priority if elected.
“I remember promising the people that if elected President, the Ho–Aflao Road would be my number one priority, and today I am pleased with the progress of work on the project,” he said.
To speed up construction, the government divided the project into five sections and awarded each to different contractors, allowing work to proceed simultaneously while improving project monitoring and efficiency.
Although the entire project is scheduled for completion in December 2027, President Mahama noted that progress on several sections has exceeded expectations. According to him, one section is nearly 75 percent complete, while others have reached between 30 and 35 percent completion. He expressed optimism that completed portions of the highway would begin opening to motorists within six months, with substantial stretches expected to be operational by early or mid-2027.
The President commended contractors, engineers and technical teams for maintaining a strong pace of work and urged them to sustain the momentum to ensure timely delivery of the project.
In addition, President Mahama announced that the Akatsi North District is expected to benefit from the proposed US$500 million World Bank-funded Rural Roads Programme, which will focus on improving feeder roads to enhance access to farming communities and stimulate local economic development. Under the programme, the Logakope Junction–Agormor–Kove Road has been earmarked for rehabilitation, pending parliamentary approval.
The Ho–Aflao Highway is widely regarded as a critical transport corridor connecting communities across the Volta Region to Ghana’s eastern border with Togo. Its completion is expected to boost trade, improve road safety, reduce travel times and support economic growth throughout the region.
