A 31-year-old woman, Stella Amedzorme, has been sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to abducting an eight-month-old baby at the Kpando Market in the Volta Region.
The Kpando Circuit Court handed down the sentence on August 3, 2026, following investigations by the Police that led to the safe rescue of the child.
According to the Volta North Regional Police Command, the incident occurred on July 17, 2026, when the baby’s 21-year-old mother, Gloria Xagbe, briefly left her son in the care of Amedzorme, who was also a market trader.
The mother had reportedly asked Amedzorme to watch the baby while she went to purchase packaging bags. However, when she returned, both Amedzorme and her son were nowhere to be found.
She immediately reported the matter to the Police, prompting investigations and a search for the missing child.
Baby Rescued in Oti Region
Acting on intelligence, Police officers arrested Amedzorme on July 18 at Toviate, a suburb of Kwamekrom in the Oti Region.
The eight-month-old baby was found safe at the location and was subsequently reunited with his family.
During investigations, Amedzorme reportedly admitted taking the child on the instructions of her fiancΓ©, who is currently at large.
She first appeared before the Kpando Circuit Court on July 20, 2026, and was remanded into Police custody.
When she returned to court on August 3, she pleaded guilty to the offence and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.
Police Continue Search for Suspected Accomplice
The Volta North Regional Police Command said efforts are ongoing to arrest Amedzorme’s fiancΓ© to assist with investigations into the case.
The Police also urged parents and guardians to exercise caution when leaving children in the care of other people, stressing the importance of vigilance in protecting children from potential abduction.
The safe recovery of the baby has brought relief to the family and residents of Kpando following the incident, which had caused concern among traders and members of the local community.
The case also highlights the need for parents and caregivers to remain vigilant, particularly in busy public places such as markets where children can easily become vulnerable.
