HO, VOLTA REGION — August 19, 2026: Former Ghana Black Stars captain André “Dede” Ayew has donated GH¢10,000 to support the development of para-sports in the Volta Region.
The donation was made in support of athletes participating in the 6th Inter-Regional Wheelchair Basketball Championship, which recently concluded in Ho.
Ayew’s contribution is expected to help strengthen support for athletes with disabilities and encourage greater participation in wheelchair basketball and other para-sport disciplines across the region.
Greater Accra dominates wheelchair basketball championship
The five-day championship brought together wheelchair basketball teams from different regions to compete in Ho.
Greater Accra Region emerged as the overall dominant force, winning both the men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball titles at the competition.
The tournament provided athletes with an opportunity to demonstrate their abilities while promoting inclusion and the development of competitive para-sports in Ghana.
Support for para-athletes
The donation from André Ayew adds to growing support for para-sports in the Volta Region. Regional authorities and sports stakeholders have increasingly emphasized the need to provide athletes with disabilities with better training opportunities, equipment and financial assistance.
The Volta Regional Minister has also supported the region’s para-athletes, including providing financial assistance and provisions to help participants.
Ayew’s donation is therefore being viewed as an important contribution toward encouraging athletes and improving the environment for para-sports development.
Promoting inclusive sports development
Wheelchair basketball has become an important platform for promoting inclusion and creating opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in competitive sports.
