The Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, has supported the upcoming 6th Inter-Regional Wheelchair Basketball Championship with a cash donation of GHβ΅10,000 and five 25kg bags of rice.
The support was presented following a courtesy call on the Regional Minister by the leadership of the Volta Para Sports and Mobility Empowerment Association (VPMEA), led by its President, Madam Betty Gharbin.
The five-day competition is scheduled to take place at the Ho Sports Stadium from August 13 to 17, 2026, bringing together wheelchair basketball athletes from five regions across Ghana. Organisers expect approximately 150 participants to take part in the championship.
Minister pledges additional support
During the meeting, VPMEA outlined some of the key logistical needs for the tournament, including wheelchairs, security, transportation and other arrangements required for the smooth organisation of the competition.
Hon. James Gunu commended the association for its efforts to promote and develop para sports in the Volta Region. He urged the organisers to ensure that the competition is conducted to a high standard while encouraging participating athletes to prepare adequately and compete for victory.
Beyond the cash and food donation, the Regional Minister also pledged to engage the Ghana Police Service to provide security for the championship.
He further indicated that discussions would be held with Metro Mass Transit to support transportation for participating teams to and from the venues throughout the five-day event.
Promoting inclusive sports
The organisers say the championship is expected to help generate greater interest in para sports and wheelchair basketball while creating opportunities for athletes with disabilities to showcase their abilities.
The VPMEA leadership expressed appreciation to the Regional Minister for the support, noting that the assistance would contribute to the successful organisation of the championship.
The 2026 competition will mark the sixth edition of the Inter-Regional Wheelchair Basketball Championship.
