Akatsi North targets end of 2026 to eliminate schools under trees

Akatsi North, Volta Region — The Akatsi North District Assembly, in collaboration with the Member of Parliament for the area, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, is targeting the end of 2026 to eliminate schools operating under trees in the district.

The initiative follows the completion and commissioning of several new classroom facilities across communities in the Akatsi North District as part of efforts to address gaps in basic education infrastructure.

The District Chief Executive (DCE), Bless Katamani, said the Assembly had made significant progress in providing permanent classroom facilities for schools that previously faced infrastructure challenges.

Among the recently completed projects are a two-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities at Kpegbadza and three-unit classroom blocks with ancillary facilities at Nyitawuta, Avevoe and Hadave.

The projects form part of a broader education infrastructure programme aimed at creating safer and more conducive environments for teaching and learning across the district.

According to the DCE, assessments conducted at five schools showed that they no longer required additional classroom blocks. He identified Lomé Ghana School and Nuaxorve Basic School as among the remaining schools requiring attention.

The Assembly is also constructing Kindergarten blocks at some schools to address outstanding infrastructure needs.

Mr. Katamani said the ultimate objective is to ensure that no school in Akatsi North requires additional classroom infrastructure by the end of 2026.

“The objective is to ensure that no school in the district would require a classroom block by the end of the year.”

Improved learning environment

The DCE said permanent classroom facilities would help protect pupils and teachers from harsh weather conditions while also safeguarding teaching and learning materials from damage and theft.

The District Director of Education, John Badzi, welcomed the projects, describing improved classroom infrastructure as critical to creating a conducive environment for effective teaching and learning.

The latest developments build on education infrastructure projects launched earlier in the year. In February, the Akatsi North MP cut the sod for additional classroom blocks, teachers’ accommodation and Kindergarten facilities, with the broader objective of achieving a zero classroom deficit in the district.

If the remaining projects are completed as planned, Akatsi North could enter 2027 with significantly reduced infrastructure gaps and improved learning conditions for pupils across the district.
