Kpedze, Volta Region β A 25-year-old Togolese mason has been convicted by the Adentan Circuit Court after pleading guilty to stealing a four-year-old boy from Kpedze in the Volta Region and taking him to Accra while falsely claiming to be the child’s father.
The convict, identified as David Kpandoyo, admitted to the offence of child stealing during proceedings before the court, presided over by Mrs. Angela Attachie. Following his guilty plea, the court convicted him and scheduled sentencing after the conviction proceedings.
According to the prosecution, the child went missing from Kpedze on July 1, 2026, where he lived with his mother, 25-year-old hairdresser Patience Ablordefey Afefa. Two days later, a resident in New Legon, Accra, found the young boy wandering alone and reported the matter to the police after the child was unable to identify his home or family.
Investigators said community announcements were made in an attempt to locate the child’s relatives. During the search, Kpandoyo appeared and claimed the boy was his son. However, police became suspicious when he failed to produce any documents proving his claim or provide credible information about the child’s mother and background.
The case took a significant turn when officers received a missing child flyer containing the boy’s photograph and his mother’s contact information, confirming that the child had been reported missing from Kpedze. Police immediately contacted the child’s mother and requested that she report to the station with documents to verify the child’s identity.
When the child’s mother arrived at the New Legon Police Station with relatives, she confirmed she had never met Kpandoyo and that he had no relationship with her son. During subsequent investigations, the suspect admitted that the child was not his and confessed to taking the boy from Kpedze while working in the area before transporting him to Accra.
In his statement before the court, Kpandoyo claimed he had been drinking alcohol when the child approached him. He said he gave the boy some money, took him home, and could not remember what happened afterwards because he was intoxicated. The court nevertheless convicted him based on his guilty plea and the evidence presented by the prosecution.
The case has drawn widespread public attention and renewed calls for parents and guardians to remain vigilant while authorities continue efforts to protect children from abduction and trafficking.
