Volta Regional Minister Calls for Peaceful Resolution of Chieftaincy Disputes to Boost Development

Ho, Volta Region – The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has called on traditional leaders across the Volta Region to prioritize the peaceful resolution of chieftaincy and land disputes, stressing that lasting peace is essential for attracting investment and accelerating development.

The Minister made the appeal during a courtesy visit by a delegation from the Mepe Traditional Council and the Mepe Development Association (MDA) at the Volta Regional Coordinating Council in Ho.

According to Mr. Gunu, unresolved chieftaincy disputes continue to hinder economic progress and discourage both local and foreign investors from taking advantage of the region’s vast investment opportunities. He noted that while several disputes have been settled through dialogue, many cases remain unresolved and require the collective commitment of traditional authorities and stakeholders.

He emphasized that chiefs play a vital role in maintaining peace and stability within their communities, adding that a peaceful environment creates the confidence needed for businesses to thrive and for development projects to flourish.

The Regional Minister commended the Mepe Traditional Council for promoting unity and development through the annual Afenorto Festival, describing the initiative as an example worthy of emulation by other traditional areas in the region.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, the Manklalo of Mepe, Togbe Nego, congratulated Mr. Gunu on his leadership and reaffirmed the support of the chiefs and people of Mepe for efforts aimed at improving development across the Volta Region.

He also expressed appreciation for the commencement of reconstruction works on the Sege–Battor–Mepe–Dove Junction Road, noting that the project is expected to enhance transportation, improve access to markets, and stimulate economic activity within the area.

However, Togbe Nego appealed to the government to assist in rehabilitating roads within Mepe, many of which were severely damaged following the Akosombo and Kpong dam spillage. He said improving the town’s road network would enhance mobility and support local development.

The delegation also invited President John Dramani Mahama to grace the 70th edition of the Afenorto Festival through the Regional Minister.

Observers believe the Minister’s renewed call for dialogue underscores the critical link between peace, traditional leadership, and sustainable development. As the Volta Region seeks to position itself as a destination for investment and tourism, resolving longstanding chieftaincy disputes remains a key priority for unlocking its full economic potential.
