Keta Port Project Remains a Major Investment Focus as Stakeholder Engagement Deepens

Keta, Volta Region – The proposed Keta Port Project continues to gain momentum as one of Ghana’s most significant infrastructure and investment initiatives, with government officials reaffirming its potential to transform the economic landscape of the Volta Region.

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has intensified stakeholder engagement following the successful acquisition of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) permit, a key regulatory milestone that paves the way for the project’s implementation. Recent consultations brought together traditional leaders, local government officials, fisherfolk, civil society organisations, business groups, and residents to discuss the project’s roadmap and expected benefits.

According to GPHA, the Keta Port is expected to become Ghana’s third commercial seaport and serve as a strategic gateway for transit trade to landlocked countries such as Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. The project is anticipated to strengthen Ghana’s position as a regional logistics hub while opening new opportunities for commerce across West Africa.

Interest from investors has also been strong. GPHA has confirmed that 42 local and international companies have expressed interest in developing the port, with a comprehensive evaluation process underway to identify the most qualified firms for the project.

Beyond its impact on maritime trade, the Keta Port Project is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs during both the construction and operational phases. Officials say the development will stimulate growth in transportation, logistics, tourism, hospitality, construction, and other supporting industries throughout the Volta Region.

Volta Regional Minister James Gunu has described the project as a transformational investment that will unlock new economic opportunities for local communities. He has urged residents to continue supporting the initiative, while encouraging young people to equip themselves with vocational and technical skills needed to benefit from future employment opportunities.

As procurement activities continue and investor due diligence progresses, expectations remain high that the Keta Port will become a catalyst for industrialisation, increased regional trade, and sustainable economic development in the Volta Region.
