UHAS to become a centre for health research

Ho, Volta Region – The Government of Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) into a premier centre for health research, innovation, and vaccine development in Africa.

During his working visit to the Volta Region, President John Dramani Mahama announced that government would continue investing in the university’s research infrastructure, academic capacity, and partnerships to position UHAS as a leader in addressing Africa’s healthcare challenges.

As part of the visit, the President toured the university’s newly completed state-of-the-art laboratory complex, describing it as a major milestone in Ghana’s quest to strengthen medical research and improve public health outcomes.

According to the President, expanding UHAS’s research capabilities will support the development of locally driven solutions to infectious diseases, public health emergencies, and emerging healthcare needs while reducing the country’s dependence on external research institutions.

He noted that the university is expected to play a vital role in training the next generation of health professionals, scientists, and researchers, contributing to Ghana’s vision of becoming a regional hub for medical education and innovation.

The initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to improve healthcare delivery, promote scientific research, and strengthen Ghana’s health security through investment in higher education and research institutions.

Residents and stakeholders in the Volta Region have welcomed the government’s renewed commitment, expressing optimism that the expansion of UHAS will create employment opportunities, attract international collaborations, and boost the region’s economy.

Established in Ho, UHAS has grown into one of Ghana’s leading health-focused public universities, offering specialized education in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health, and allied health sciences.
