Weta, Volta Region β More than 5,000 residents and over 1,000 households in the Weta area of the Ketu North Municipality have been severely affected by flooding following days of heavy rainfall.
The floods submerged vast stretches of rice farms, washed away sections of roads, and damaged homes and other essential infrastructure, leaving many families displaced and disrupting economic activities in the predominantly farming community.
Local farmers have reported significant losses as large portions of cultivated rice fields remain underwater, threatening this season’s harvest and raising concerns over food security and household incomes. The destruction is expected to have a lasting impact on the livelihoods of many residents who depend on rice farming as their primary source of income.
Residents are calling on the government, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), humanitarian agencies, and other stakeholders to provide immediate relief, including food, temporary shelter, and support for affected farmers to restore their livelihoods.
Community leaders have also appealed for urgent rehabilitation of damaged roads to improve access to the area and facilitate the delivery of relief supplies.
Authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage while emergency response efforts are underway. The flooding adds to growing concerns about the increasing frequency of extreme weather events and the need for improved drainage systems and long-term flood mitigation measures across vulnerable communities in the Volta Region.
