The Volta Regional House of Chiefs (VRHC) has secured three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Chinese companies as part of efforts to attract investment, promote technology transfer and support infrastructure development in the Volta Region.
The agreements were signed during a one-week business and investment visit to China by an eight-member delegation of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs.
The delegation is led by the President of the House of Chiefs and Paramount Chief of Anfoega, Togbe Tepre Hodo IV.
Three key areas of partnership
The first agreement was signed with Guangdong Welleap Information Technology Company, a Chinese technology firm. The partnership is focused on digital transformation and technology transfer to the Volta Region.
A second MoU was signed with Foshan Jinting Construction Engineering Company Limited, a construction and engineering firm based in Foshan. The agreement focuses on infrastructure and industrial development.
The third agreement was signed with SINOHUI Investment Ghana Limited and is intended to provide a framework for attracting and channelling Chinese direct investment into Ghana.
According to reports, Togbe Tepre Hodo said the partnerships form part of a broader strategy to reposition the Volta Region for sustainable development through international cooperation.
Investment mission focused on development opportunities
The agreements follow the arrival of the Volta chiefs in China earlier this week for an investment mission aimed at identifying opportunities that could support development in the region.
The mission has focused on areas including information technology, technology transfer, education and skills development, agriculture and agribusiness, sanitation and waste management, as well as tourism and heritage development.
The delegation has also been undertaking factory visits and business-to-business engagements with potential investors and business partners.
What the partnerships could mean for the Volta Region
The partnerships are expected to provide opportunities for increased technology transfer, infrastructure development and investment cooperation.
The technology agreement, in particular, is expected to support efforts to expand digital capabilities, while the construction partnership could open opportunities for infrastructure and industrial projects.
The investment agreement is expected to provide an avenue for Chinese investors to explore opportunities in Ghana, including projects connected to the development priorities of the Volta Region.
However, details such as specific investment amounts, project timelines and the number of jobs expected to be created have not yet been publicly disclosed in the reports announcing the MoUs.
Chiefs continue China engagements
The delegation is expected to continue its business engagements and factory visits in China before completing its one-week mission.
The investment tour is part of efforts to connect the Volta Region with international investors and explore partnerships that could contribute to economic and social development.
The Volta Regional House of Chiefs has indicated that the partnerships are intended to support sustainable development while creating opportunities for technology transfer and investment in the region.
