Twenty young footballers from across the Volta Region have commenced camping in Akatsi as preparations intensify for the 2026 Inter-Regional Basic Schools Sports Festival.
The selected players, drawn from 15 districts across the region, are undergoing training and preparation ahead of the national competition, where they will represent the Volta Region against teams from other parts of Ghana.
The camping exercise forms part of efforts to build a strong and competitive regional contingent for the festival, which will feature several sporting disciplines, including football, volleyball, athletics, handball and other events.
According to Volta Regional Physical Education Coordinator, Mr Roger Tey, the players were selected through a screening process at the district level and will be prepared by a team of coaches to ensure they are ready for the competition.
The 20-man boys’ football team includes players from districts such as North Tongu, Afadzato South, Keta, North Dayi, Ketu South, Ho West, Ho Municipal, Kpando, Hohoe, South Tongu, Ketu North, Anloga and Ziope.
The Volta Region will also field teams in girls’ football, volleyball and athletics, providing more young athletes with the opportunity to showcase their talents on the national stage.
The region’s preparations have received support from individuals and stakeholders. First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Akatsi South MP, Bernard Ahiafor, donated GHΒ’15,000 towards preparations, while Togbui Tenuvi II also contributed GHΒ’2,000 to support the regional contingent.
Mr Tey expressed optimism that the athletes would represent the Volta Region creditably and called on individuals, corporate bodies and other stakeholders to continue supporting the young sportsmen and women.
The Inter-Regional Basic Schools Sports Festival is expected to bring together talented young athletes from across Ghana, providing a platform for the discovery and development of future sporting stars.
