The Volta Region has once again been recognized as Ghana’s leading producer of premium-grade vegetables, reaffirming its important role in the country’s agricultural sector.
According to the Volta Regional Director of Agriculture, Mr. William Dzemefe, the region continues to outperform every other part of Ghana in the production of high-quality vegetables, thanks to its favorable climate, fertile soils, and the dedication of local farmers. He noted that the Anloga enclave remains the heart of vegetable production in the region, supplying fresh produce to markets across the country.
Speaking on the region’s agricultural performance, Mr. Dzemefe explained that vegetables grown in the Volta Region are widely appreciated for their freshness, quality, and consistency, making them highly sought after by traders, consumers, and food processing businesses.
Anloga Remains Ghana’s Vegetable Hub
The Anloga area has earned a strong reputation over the years as Ghana’s vegetable basket. Farmers in the enclave cultivate a wide variety of vegetables, including tomatoes, onions, peppers, cabbage, lettuce, cucumber, okra, carrots, and other leafy greens.
These vegetables are transported daily to major markets in Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, Ho, Cape Coast, and several neighboring countries, contributing significantly to food security and household incomes.
Agriculture Driving Economic Growth
Agriculture remains one of the biggest contributors to the Volta Region’s economy, employing thousands of people in farming, transportation, marketing, and agro-processing.
Mr. Dzemefe encouraged young people to take advantage of opportunities in commercial vegetable farming, describing the sector as one of the fastest-growing areas capable of creating jobs and reducing unemployment.
He also emphasized the importance of modern farming methods, irrigation systems, improved seeds, and climate-smart agricultural practices to increase production while maintaining the high quality for which the region is known.
Challenges Facing Farmers
Despite the region’s success, vegetable farmers continue to face several challenges, including:
- Rising cost of farm inputs.
- Unpredictable weather conditions.
- Limited irrigation infrastructure.
- Pest and disease outbreaks.
- High transportation costs to major markets.
Agricultural experts believe that increased government investment, improved irrigation facilities, and better access to finance will help farmers expand production and strengthen Ghana’s food supply.
