Greater Accra Win Both Wheelchair Basketball Titles in Ho

Ho, Volta Region β€” August 19, 2026: Greater Accra Region emerged as the dominant force at the 6th Inter-Regional Wheelchair Basketball Championship, winning both the men’s and women’s titles at the Ho Sports Stadium.

The five-day championship, held from August 13 to 17, 2026, brought together wheelchair basketball teams from five regions across Ghana. The competition was organised to promote para-sports development and provide athletes with disabilities an opportunity to compete at a high level.

Greater Accra’s double triumph highlighted the region’s growing strength in wheelchair basketball, as its men’s and women’s teams successfully secured the ultimate honours at the tournament.

The championship also provided an important platform for athletes to demonstrate their skills, determination and competitive spirit while encouraging greater inclusion of persons with disabilities in sports.

Volta Region supports para-sports

The competition received support from the Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, who donated GHΒ’10,000 and five 25kg bags of rice towards the organisation of the championship.

The support followed a courtesy call on the Minister by the leadership of the Volta Para Sports and Mobility Empowerment Association (VPMEA), led by its President, Madam Betty Gharbin.

The Regional Minister also pledged to engage the Ghana Police Service on security arrangements and indicated that discussions would be held with Metro Mass Transit to assist with transportation for participating teams.

Promoting inclusive sports

Organisers say the Inter-Regional Wheelchair Basketball Championship is helping to raise awareness of para-sports while creating opportunities for athletes with disabilities to develop their talents.

The successful staging of the sixth edition in Ho is also expected to strengthen efforts to make the Volta Region an important centre for para-sports development in Ghana.

Greater Accra’s achievement of winning both titles provides another major highlight for the championship and demonstrates the growing competitiveness of wheelchair basketball across the country.
