HO, VOLTA REGION — September 23, 2026: Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, has joined senior government officials, diplomats, aviation regulators and industry stakeholders to officially welcome Africa World Airlines’ (AWA) new Embraer E190 aircraft to Ghana.
The ceremony, held under the theme “Expanding Horizons, Elevating West African Connectivity,” marked another milestone in AWA’s 14-year contribution to Ghana’s aviation industry.
Among the dignitaries at the event were the Minister for Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, statesman and former Ghanaian Ambassador Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, as well as representatives from the aviation industry and diplomatic community.
New aircraft to increase passenger capacity
The newly introduced Embraer E190 is a 102-seater aircraft featuring AWA’s refreshed corporate identity and Ghana’s national colours.
The addition is expected to increase AWA’s capacity and support improved domestic and regional air connectivity, with potential benefits for tourism, trade, investment and business travel.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Transport Minister highlighted government’s investments in airport infrastructure and connectivity, including efforts to expand and upgrade airports across the country.
According to the Volta Regional Coordinating Council, stronger air connectivity could create opportunities for the Volta Region by linking its people, tourism destinations and investment opportunities more effectively with other parts of Ghana and the wider West African market.
Opportunities for Volta Region
For the Volta Region, improved aviation connectivity could support the growth of tourism and business activities while making it easier for visitors and investors to access the region.
The region has several tourism and investment destinations, and stakeholders have increasingly highlighted improved transportation infrastructure as an important factor in unlocking their economic potential.
AWA has reportedly transported more than five million passengers over its 14-year history and has a workforce that is 97 percent Ghanaian, according to the Volta Regional Coordinating Council.
The arrival of the E190 therefore comes as Ghana continues efforts to strengthen its aviation sector and position the country as an important aviation and economic hub in West Africa.
